30th October 1972

On this day in 1972, Spurs eventually defeated Middlesbrough in the League Cup in what was the second replay of their Third Round tie. In the days of replays, if sides couldn’t be separated after extra time, it would go to another replay (and sometimes yet another) rather than a penalty shoot-out.

Following a 1-1 draw at Ayesome Park, then a 0-0 draw in the preceding few weeks, this Second Replay looked to be ending in another draw and the prospect of a Third Replay! However, an Alan Gilzean goal late in extra time secured a 2-1 victory and progress for the club. Progress that would see them go all the way to Wembley and lift the League Cup for the second time.
