On 20th April 1901, Spurs took the field at Crystal Palace in front of a then world record crowd of 114,815 to play Sheffield United in the 1901 FA Cup Final.

Spurs were still a non-league club, playing in the Southern League, whilst Sheffield United were a First Division team, and had been for the previous 9 seasons. Spurs were huge underdogs, despite being a successful Southern league team having won the title the previous year, but they were still some 8 years before they would progress to the Football League – they were also playing a team that had won the Cup only two years previously.

Sheffield United, in line with expectations, took the lead after just 10 minutes. However, unlike previous year’s final where Southampton, who were also Southern League team when reaching final, Spurs didn’t fold and fought back, equalising just 13 minutes later with a Sandy Brown goal.

Just 6 minutes into the second half, Sandy Brown sensationally put Spurs ahead, when he scored his and Spurs second.

United answered immediately and scored an equaliser just a minute later.

The score would remain 2-2 until full time and a replay was arranged to be played 7 days later at Burden Park, Bolton.
