On Saturday 11th March 1995, saw one of the truly memorable Spurs performances of an otherwise fairly miserable decade.
The FA Cup Quarter Final, although not the number of goals of the previous round’s replay fightback at Southampton, the tie at Anfield had a very exciting end. For Spurs, Anfield wasn’t a ground with many happy memories for them, having gone 70+ years without a victory up until March 1985.
Things looked to be taking a familiar pattern when Liverpool took the lead late in the first half but Teddy Sheringham managed to equalise right on half time. A lovely lay off from Jurgen Klinsmann the edge of the box into the path of Teddy, still with a bit to do, he made a delicate sidefoot pass/shot into the net past David James in the Liverpool goal.
In the second half Spurs played much the better and it looked all set for a replay back at the Lane, but in the 89th minute, Liverpool had a throw deep in their own half. No immediate danger, but a scuffed clearance up field fell to Anderton 40 yards out. His ball towards Teddy on the edge of the box, was expertly flicked into the path of Klinsmann running through to score the winner past James into the far corner. Cue wild celebrations from the Spurs fans and on the bench with Gerry Francis and the subs.
