On 17th April 1961, Spurs secured the first leg of the League and FA Cup Double, when they beat their closest rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, 2-1 at White Hart Lane.
61,205 fans packed into the Lane on a Monday night, knowing a victory secured the club it’s second League title, 10 years after the first one, coincidentally also secured with a victory over Sheff Weds at the Lane in April 1951.
Wednesday had been the first team to beat Spurs in the league in 1960/61 season when they had won 2-1 at Hillsborough on 12th November 1960, in Spurs 17th league match.
This night was very much about securing the league title than revenge for that defeat – a tense affair, that saw Wednesday take the lead after 30 minutes, when Megson scored for the Owls when a rebound from a free kick fell to him.
With 3 minutes of the first half remaining, Bobby Smith snatched the equaliser with a vicious shot past his England team mater, Peter Springett in the Wednesday goal. Then a minute later Les Allen scored Spurs second and ultimately winning goal when he rifled a Maurice Norman header into the roof of the net.
The second half was a tough battle as Wednesday looked to get back into the match, but Spurs held on and secured the League title. The fans spilled onto the pitch at the end to join in the celebrations and refused to leave until the captain led the team back out to acknowledge them.
